You've arrived on a rather special night... The 50th Anniversary Spectacular Tour of The Rocky Horror Picture Show! I must begin by admitting that I'm a huge Rocky Horror fan, even my dog is called Rocky. I've loved the show since I was young, watching countless tour productions and screenings (including one in a graveyard!). I've also had my Magenta maid costume since I was 16, remaining one of my most loved possessions. You can imagine my inevitable excitement in attending this 50th Anniversary screening, complete with a live 'shadow cast' and Q&A, featuring original film stars Patricia Quinn (Magenta), Nell Campbell (Columbia), Barry Bostwick (Brad Majors), and exclusive to London, Peter Hinwood (Rocky). For all you Time-Warpers out there, you'll find a flawless evening where you really can give yourself over to absolute pleasure.
Touring UK venues until the 3rd May, any fans that are on the fence should seriously consider booking. This is exactly the kind of event you don't want to miss. It's a rare chance to see the original stars in person, hearing them reflect on how they were first cast in their iconic roles, soon to feature in one of musical theatre's most iconic pieces of media.

Hosted by the current president of the Rocky Horror fan club Larry Viezel, we were immediately in safe hands. He brings real energy and depth of knowledge, kicking procedures off with a costume competition judged with 'Little' Nell Campbell. The team invite audience members to the front of the stage to showcase their outfits, setting a celebratory tone in the spirit of the show.
The panel itself feels genuinely special, as the aforementioned original cast members share stories of getting the production off the ground. From its uncertain beginnings onstage at the Royal Court Theatre, to its initial 'flop' reception on screen, before transforming into one of cinema's biggest cult phenomena. Half a century on, this gives the night a real sense of occasion. It isn't just nostalgic; it is a reminder of just how unlikely, and how enduring The Rocky Horror Picture Show really is.
Then comes the main event, as we are treated to a 4k big screen viewing of the '75 film, which was monumental in London's Dominion Theatre, surround by hundreds of fellow fans. But what truly elevates the evening is the 'shadow cast': amateur performers dressed as the characters, acting out scenes frame-by-frame alongside the film.

First-time attendees, be warned: this is not your average, passive film experience. Audience participation is a crucial element to it. People shout outrageous and genuinely hilarious lines back at the screen throughout. Classic examples, to give you a flavour, involve calling Brad an 'asshole' and Janet a 'slut', all in jest and highly encouraged. Everything is chaotic, irreverent, and truly part of the tradition... it isn't for the faint-hearted.
All attendees are handed prop bags at the beginning, with items to use throughout: a newspaper to shield ourselves from the 'rain', a glowstick for Over At The Frankenstein's Place and party hats & poppers for Rocky's birthday celebration. No-one looks ridiculous as everyone engages with the material, one of the highlights being The Time Warp, as the entire auditorium gets to their feet in a shared, surreal moment.
On paper, it sounds entirely mad, and probably doesn't do much to explain the plot to newcomers. But that's kind of the purpose, creating a theatrical adventure as the story takes a back seat... You join straight-laced couple Brad and Janet on their camp journey of self-discovery, embracing the unconventional in Dr. Frank-N-Furter's strange castle.
Touring a limited selection of UK cities, The Rocky Horror Picture Show: 50th Anniversary Spectacular is a full-blown communal experience, and a love letter to the fans that have kept the musical alive for decades. Between the rare chance of listening to the original cast's unlikely legacy, to the electric atmosphere shared with the shadow cast and audience, this is your invitation to be a part of something special. Rocky Horror devotees and curious newbies, prepare for an unforgettable screening (while the stage show also tours the UK)!
