Matilda - The Musical Review: even if you're little, you really can do a lot!

First staged in 2010 by the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford-upon-Avon, Matilda - The Musical has charmed audiences all across the world. Having welcomed millions of children (and grown up children!) through the doors of the Cambridge Theatre, this year marks the show's 15th anniversary in the West End. And tonight, we were invited to see the opening night of the 2026-27 cast!
From the miraculous mind of Roald Dahl, Matilda Wormwood was born. An extraordinary child genius who is neglected by her superficial parents, and whose wisdom is shunned by the wicked headmistress Miss Trunchbull. But Matilda's school teacher Miss Honey sees the potential in her, and unlocks something truly special.
Welcoming the new company made for a delightful evening, as resident director Lewis Barnshaw entered the stage to introduce the 38-strong cast that have been in rehearsals for the past twelve weeks... with 23 of those making their professional debuts! You really wouldn't know it, the show runs like such a well-oiled machine, largely down to Peter Darling's geometric and stylized choreography. Ensemble numbers are where this production really shines, especially when reaching Revolting Children in Act Two, we are filled with such pride for how phenomenally talented these young performers are.
In the title role of Matilda tongiht was Scarlett Lindsey, and here we see a true professional in her element. There really is nowhere to hide as she takes to the stage alone for her opening number Naughty. And yet, Lindsey remains committed to every one of Matilda's lines, acting with conviction and precision in every scene. Harry Relf is also a marvel as Bruce, oozing fun and infectious joy... as well as a pretty epic burp!
Rob Howell's design dominates all areas of the auditorium, as hundreds of alphabet blocks envelop the proscenium and seep into the seating area, breathing all things literature and playfulness. A second feature comes from Antony Lawrence's theatrically menacing Miss Trunchbull as she reveals the upgraded chokey, and laser beams scatter all around the audience. We feel involved in the action, especially for those in the stalls, as the centre aisle is used by the actors a lot!
I find very few lyricists make a strong impression following the show, however Tim Minchin's musical work does exactly that. The School Song is especially intelligent in hiding an entire alphabet progression through its seemingly ordinary wording. And yet, Minchin's writing isn't afraid to be silly, with Mr Wormwood's (Matt Corner) post-interval Telly providing light entertainment before an emotional Act Two.
Amassing a run-time of 2hrs 40m, the musical itself is quite slow paced. With a book by Dennis Kelly, there are some wonderfully tender scenes of dialogue. Although it spends a lot of time in dissecting character backstory through metaphor, with the story of an Escapologist and an Acrobat, which can be too heavy and spoken to maintain our attention span. And by the time the Russian Mafia enter, we begin to question whether certain scenes could be condensed to put more energy into the crowd-pleasing moments.

You can tell that Matilda - The Musical is such a beloved show, the audience were loud! Almost as loud as Mrs Wormwood's fabulous costume, also designed by Howell. It is visually staggering, and importantly with Paul Kieve's illusions, it keeps the essence of childhood alive. Come along to the Cambridge Theatre for a staple of London's glittering West End, I wouldn't be surprised if it had another 15 years to come!
